The shield on the eagle's breast has a blue chief over vertical red and white stripes. 
The words "United States Coast Guard" are inscribed in an arc above the eagle. 
The Coast Guard motto, "Semper Paratus", is inscribed below the eagle. 
The year "1790" is inscribed in Arabic numerals below the motto.
